Tenuta San Guido

In the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, near the historic village of Bolgheri, lies an estate that changed the course of Italian winemaking forever: Tenuta San Guido. This is not merely a winery; it is the birthplace of the 'Super Tuscan' and the home of the legendary Sassicaia.

History & Vision

The story begins in the 1940s with Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. Inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux, he cherished an 'impossible' dream: to create an aristocratic red wine in a region then unknown for quality viticulture. Breaking with local traditions (which were based on Sangiovese), he planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc on the stony soils ("sassicaia" meaning 'place of many stones') of the estate.

After years of experimentation and private consumption, Sassicaia was commercially released in 1968. The rest is history. The wine rapidly achieved cult status and placed Bolgheri firmly on the global map.
